Remember the time I confessed to you guys about my blowout that lasted two weeks? It was incredible, but I also felt kind of disgusting—I actually couldn't decide whether I wanted to make my exceptionally dirty hair public. Still, I believe in sharing hair tricks and tips whenever possible, so I went back to the salon to ask my personal wizard (Crystal Hanna from DreamDry) what the heck she did. Before you book your next blowout, read up on the right things to ask for and what to do after.
Pick the right style in the first place.
We all know our hair, so be honest with yourself. I might love sexy beach waves post-salon, but by the next day my defined waves have turned into something frizzy and completely shapeless. As such, I ask for a few degrees shy of stick-straight. "Ask for full, smooth, and voluminous to see the longest lasting impact that won't require retouching. Beach waves and super-straight looks are popular, but if you're looking for something that doesn't require much maintenance, request a full smooth blowout. At Dreamdry, we call that our Stevie."
Name the right celebrity as inspiration.
"Lauren Conrad, Gisele Bundchen, and Lily Aldridge are three celebs we hear more frequently. They all have signature looks, and you can count on them to have volume, smoothness, and movement on the ends."
Trust your stylist to know the right products to use.
I get anxious with my hair, but it's vital to remind yourself that you're with a pro and they know what's smart to put on your strands. "A medium-hold hairspray is a great finish and can help with the longevity," Crystal told me. "Remember: A little goes a long way when it comes to product. Use some root lifter if you have fine hair and some smoothing serum if yours is thicker."
Sleep with your hair up.
The moment a hair pro recommended this to me, I was drugstore-bound and bought a value pack of scrunchies. "Put your hair in a high, loose bun so it won't become flat throughout the night. When you wake up, shake it out and go." Skip the tight elastic since it can cause creases, and try a soft tie (like a scrunchie) instead.
Don't overdose with dry shampoo.
Crystal reminded me that, as with all products, dry shampoo should only be used when needed, and moderation is key. "If you hair isn't oily, don't use it. Keep it simple and use sparingly."
